Cargo ship attacked with drones in Black Sea; Three Indian crew on board safe

Bucharest/New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) A Turkish-owned commercial cargo ship MV Royad Mammadov was hit by drones in the Black Sea on Monday and caught fire and sank, resulting in the death of two crew members and injuries to others. Of the three Indian nationals aboard, one was injured. The Indian Embassy in Bucharest spoke with the Indian seafarers and is extending all possible help for their well-being welfare.
The Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged general cargo ship was carrying a cargo of corn from Ukraine's Port of Izmail toward the Port of Ravenna in Italy. It was struck approximately 20 to 30 nautical miles off the coast of Romania within neutral waters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly condemned the strike on X, stating that two Russian drones carried out the "horrific strike" on the civilian vessel. Russia has not immediately commented.
The attack triggered a massive fire that ultimately caused the vessel to sink. Emergency services mobilized by the Romanian Naval Authority successfully rescued 11 crew members. Two foreign nationals were confirmed dead.
The crew consisted of foreign nationals, including citizens from Azerbaijan and three Indian nationals.
The Indian embassy in Bucharest said in posts on X:
"We have learnt of an attack today on commercial vessel MV ROYAD MAMMADOV in the Black Sea.
"As per preliminary information, there have been 2 casualties (foreign nationals) while some crew members have been injured and are undergoing medical treatment in Romania. "
"It is further reported that there are three Indian nationals among the crew members. Mission is in close contact with the relevant authorities to ascertain further details about the safety and welfare of the Indian nationals."
It later posted:
"All three Indian nationals are safe. We have spoken to them. One of them has been injured and is receiving medical attention. We are in close touch with the hospital authorities.
"We are extending all possible support for the welfare and wellbeing of the Indian crew members."
