Democrats notch early wins in key Senate races as Republicans fight to keep control

Washington, Nov 4 (UNI) Democrats picked up three early victories in battleground Senate races on Election Night, giving the party a strong start as Republicans work to defend their majority, as per CBS news reported.
There are 35 Senate seats up for election in the midterms. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority, and Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control.
The biggest win came in North Carolina, where former Gov. Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, as per CBS news . The race is a flip for Democrats. Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican, chose not to run again, leaving the seat open. North Carolina hasn’t sent a Democrat to the Senate since 2008,.
Cooper, 69, served two terms as governor and is the longest-serving attorney general in the state’s history. He ran on a simple message: “make stuff cost less.” Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chairman, had never held office before. He entered the race with President Trump’s backing and encouragement.
In New Hampshire, Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas beat former Republican Sen. John Sununu, keeping the seat in Democratic hands after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s retirement. Pappas, 46, has served in the House since 2019 and presented himself as an independent voice for the state. He will become the first openly gay man elected to the Senate.
Sununu conceded in Manchester, telling supporters, “it is not our night.” He said he called Pappas to congratulate him and praised the strong voter turnout.
Georgia was the third Democratic win,as per US media reports though details were not immediately available.
Republicans held one seat in Florida, where Sen. Ashley Moody won a special election. She was appointed last year to fill the seat vacated by Marco Rubio, now secretary of state, and will serve out the rest of his term, which ends in early 2029.
The map looked good for the GOP at first, but rising costs and the unpopular war with Iran have put several states in play.
The outcome matters for President Trump. Republican control of both the Senate and the House has helped him advance his agenda during the first two years of his term. Tuesday’s results will help decide whether that continues.
More results are expected as polls close across the country.
But on the election day, US President Donald Trump has announced a major shift that Washington will end nearly $4 billion in annual military assistance to Israel.
The move that could mark a significant shift in the longstanding US-Israel relationship and expose growing divisions in American politics over support for the Jewish state.
Trump, who has maintained close ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and supported Israel during its war with Iran, made the announcement in an interview with Fox News on Election Day. However, he provided few details about how or when the assistance would be discontinued, leaving uncertainty over the scope and implications of the proposed move.
The announcement adds another dimension to Trump's relationship with Netanyahu, who has been his partner in the conflict with Iran. It also comes at a politically sensitive time for Israel, which is facing uncertainty following last week's election, in which no clear winner emerged, raising questions about Netanyahu's political future.
The timing of Trump's remarks is also significant for domestic US politics, where support for military assistance to Israel has increasingly become a contentious issue.
His announcement appears to reflect growing political pressure over American aid to Israel, an issue increasingly raised by Democrats, including Michigan Senator Abdul El-Sayed, who have questioned the sustainability of continued financial and military support.
