Indian seafarer killed, 19 others rescued as ship attacked off Oman coast; India condemns attack

New Delhi, Sep 23 (UNI) An Indian seafarer was killed while 19 others were rescued following an attack on the commercial vessel MV Cape Dao on Wednesday off the east coast of Oman. India has condemned the attack and reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions and enable the early return of peace to the region.
According to reports, the Antigua & Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier was transiting through international waterways near the Musandam Governorate and the Strait of Hormuz, heading toward India, when it was hit by two torpedoes, causing the vessel to catch fire, lose power and steering
The 20 Indian seafarers were among a total of 28 crew members. The 19 Indian seafarers were evacuated by Oman's Maritime Security Center. According to reports, the Indian sailor who died hailed from Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement, India condemned the attack.
The MEA said of the 20 Indian seafarers on board, 19 have been rescued, while one Indian national tragically lost his life.
"We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it said, adding that the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Omani authorities for early repatriation of the Indian seafarers. The Indian government also thanked the Omani authorities for their support.
"The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome.
"We reiterate our call for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions and enable early return of peace to the region.
"The targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region must be restored at the earliest," India said.
