Invoking Harkishan Surjeet's freedom struggle, CPI(M)'s MA Baby warns Modi, Shah against repression of protesters

New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby has invoked the legacy of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and former party general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet to condemn the alleged assault and detention of students, youth activists and opposition MPs during peaceful protests in Delhi, warning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah that suppressing democratic dissent would ultimately prove futile.
In a post on social media platform X, Baby recalled how Surjeet, then a 16-year-old boy, hoisted the Tricolour at the Hoshiarpur District Court in Punjab in 1932, on the first anniversary of Bhagat Singh's martyrdom. The British authorities subsequently shot at and jailed him for his act of defiance. Surjeet later rose to become general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Drawing a parallel between the freedom struggle and the ongoing protests in the national capital, Baby said Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were in jail for gathering peacefully at Jantar Mantar and hoisting the national flag. He also alleged that student and youth activists, along with Rajya Sabha MPs AA Rahim and V Sivadasan, had been manhandled and detained by the Delhi Police while marching peacefully towards Jantar Mantar.
The CPI(M) general secretary claimed that several students, including women, were still recovering from the alleged assault and torture they had suffered over the preceding days. Despite the police action, he said, young protesters continued to take to the streets to defend their democratic rights.
"They are still hitting the streets to defend the right to vote and the right to protest," Baby said, linking the demonstrations to wider concerns over electoral democracy and citizens' constitutional freedoms.
Issuing a sharp warning to the BJP leadership, Baby argued that the British experience demonstrated the futility of using repression to crush movements for democratic rights. "Persecuting peaceful protesters did not end well for the British. Modi and Amit Shah will be no different," he asserted.
Baby's remarks come amid mounting political tensions over protests in Delhi, where opposition parties and student groups have accused the authorities of using police action and detention to curb peaceful demonstrations. The protesters have sought to defend their right to dissent and raise concerns over the electoral process, while the alleged police excesses have drawn criticism from opposition leaders.
Baby maintained that suppressing peaceful protesters would neither resolve the grievances driving the demonstrations nor extinguish the demand for democratic freedoms.
