Kolkata: Tension outside SRFTI as Hindu Jagaran Manch rally reaches institute gate

Kolkata, Oct 4 (UNI) Tension broke out outside the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) on Sunday when members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch attempted to enter the institute during a protest rally, leading to a confrontation with police and those inside the campus.
The protesters, who marched from Ajaynagar to the SRFTI gate, allegedly pushed against the gate and tried to force their way inside.
Police deployed at the spot prevented them from entering and removed several protesters from the area.
Students and professors gathered inside the gate and were seen wearing helmets amid allegations that stones, bricks and water bottles were being thrown from outside.
Professor Debashis Sensharma was reportedly injured after being hit by a brick.
Members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch claimed that some of their protesters were also injured, alleging that water bottles were thrown at them from inside the institute.
The protesters said the rally was organised to protest an incident at the SRFTI auditorium last Sunday during an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat Samiti at the auditorium.
Organisers alleged that SFI students disrupted the programme and tore images of Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda.
The allegations were followed by clashes involving stones and bricks, leaving people on both sides injured.
The situation remained tense for nearly six to seven hours before normalcy was restored.
Four separate cases were subsequently registered in connection with the incident.
Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay had said those responsible for allegedly disrespecting Bharat Mata or Swami Vivekananda would not be spared.
The Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch said Sunday's rally was intended to protest the alleged desecration of the images.
"Anti-India elements kicked images of Bharat Mata and Vivekananda. We have demonstrated the strength of nationalists," members of the organisation said.
There was no immediate reaction from the SRFTI to Sunday's incident.
