L&T ties up with Navantia to construct amphibian LHD platforms for Indian Navy

Mumbai, Oct 10 (UNI) Mumbai-headquartered engineering company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today officially announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Navantia in Madrid, to establish the framework for a long-term collaboration, which includes the construction of amphibious Landing Helicopter Dock (LPD) platforms for the Indian Navy.
Navantia is a major Spanish state-owned company which designs, constructs as well as supports military and civilian ships, besides submarines and maritime systems.
According to the MoU, L&T will combine its engineering expertise with Navantia’s experience in the design and construction of surface ships and submarines, as well as contribute to the development of domestic capabilities in India for the construction of large ships.
Navantia has extensive experience in designing and construction of LHD vessels, like the Juan Carlos I for the Spanish Navy, besides the Canberra and Adelaide for the Royal Australian Navy.
These proven designs will serve as the basis for the Indian Navy’s LHD programme, which envisions the acquisition of four such platforms to support the India Navy’s amphibious operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, as well as other naval operations.
Commenting on the development, L&T’s Senior Vice President and Head of Precision Engineering & Systems Arun Ramchandani said, “This collaboration brings together L&T’s extensive shipbuilding capabilities and the expertise of Navantia, which is one of the world’s leading designers and builders of military vessels, to support the Indian Navy’s highly complex LPD programme. We are confident that this partnership will contribute to the strengthening of India’s maritime capabilities.”
Elaborating on the partnership, Navantia’s Director of Operations Gonzalo Mateo-Guerrero said, “We are proud to strengthen our alliance with L&T. Navantia’s experience in the design and development of strategic naval platforms, combined with L&T’s engineering excellence and track record in shipbuilding, will allow us to develop the best technical solutions for the Indian Navy. Navantia also remains committed to providing long-term support to L&T, the Indian Navy, and all other stakeholders throughout the LPD lifecycle.”
Earlier, the Indian Navy had issued a Request for Information (RFI) in 2021, for four 200 metre-long vessels with electric propulsion and the capacity to embark 900 troops.
The Indian Navy RFI had also required that the LPDs must have a deck capable of accommodating helicopters of various types, making the ship a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD), rather than a Landing Platform Dock (LPD).
According to the Indian Navy RFI, the amphibious ship is also required to be heavily armed, with 16 anti-ship missiles and 32 Vertical-Launch Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) missiles.
