Obama says US voters sent 'clear message' as Democrats celebrate historic midterm victories

Washington, Nov 4 (UNI) Former US President Barack Obama on Wednesday said American voters have sent a "clear message" through the midterm elections, calling on Democrats to build on their victories by bringing people together and offering practical solutions to the challenges facing the country.
"Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face," Obama said in a statement.
Obama, who campaigned for several Democratic candidates in the run-up to the November 3 elections, said the results reflected the efforts of candidates who contested races across the country, including in constituencies previously considered difficult for Democrats to win.
"These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots," he said.
"They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first," he added.
Obama also thanked election officials and volunteers for their role in the electoral process, while cautioning that Democrats still had work to do despite their sweeping gains.
"While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future," he said, referring to President Donald Trump's administration.
Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Ro Khanna celebrated the party's gains, declaring "DEI is back!" as candidates from historically underrepresented communities registered victories in several key races.
In a post on X, Khanna said, "DEI is back! Tonight, DEI is back as America celebrated diversity and inclusion. Likely three black governors, the first Latina governor in Texas, the first Muslim American senator, the first gay senator. I love this America."
Khanna was referring to the victories of Black, Latino, Muslim and LGBTQ candidates across the country.
Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to become Texas' first Latina governor, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the state's governorship.
In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate. Democrat Chris Pappas, who defeated former Republican Senator John Sununu in New Hampshire, became the first openly gay man elected to the Senate.
Khanna also cited the election of three Black governors — Republican Byron Donalds in Florida and Democrats Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia and David Crowley in Wisconsin. Donalds became Florida's first Black governor, Bottoms the first Black woman elected governor in the country, while Crowley secured Wisconsin's governorship.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, already the third elected Black governor in US history, also won re-election.
Hinojosa, meanwhile, pledged to represent all Texans, irrespective of their political affiliations, following her victory over Abbott.
"Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by broken politics that you did not vote at all. Hear what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you," she said in a post on X.
"There will be no special set of rules for the wealthy and powerful. No looking the other way when someone in my own party does wrong. The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility. And I intend to earn it every single day," she added.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also celebrated her re-election, saying she would return to work immediately.
"I love New York! And tomorrow, I'll get up and go right back to work," Hochul said in a post on X.
According to US News projections, Hochul defeated Republican Bruce Blakeman to secure another term, while Democrat Weiser won the Colorado gubernatorial race.
The Democratic Party's Senate leadership also celebrated its return to the chamber's majority, declaring that it had won back control of the Senate.
"Against all odds, Democrats have won back the Senate. We have five words for the American people: Relief is on the way," the party said in a post on X.
Democrats also made significant gains in traditionally Republican-leaning states. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, marking the first Democratic Senate victory in the state since 1988.
In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Senator Roger Marshall, ending a 94-year gap since the state last elected a Democrat to the Senate. In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in the Senate race, while Rob Sand won the gubernatorial contest.
Embattled GOP Rep. Max Miller lost his bid for reelection to Democrat Brian Poindexter in Ohio's 7th Congressional District, CBS News projected.
Miller defied calls over the summer to end his campaign before a deadline that would have allowed Republicans to replace him on the November ballot amid allegations of domestic abuse toward his ex-wife and young daughter. The allegations, which Miller denied, put the northeastern Ohio district long held by Republicans in play.
