Panchkula Police Mount 'Soft Skills' Offensive to Retool Force for Street-Level Diplomacy**

Panchkula, Oct 3 (UNI) In a rare admission that gun barrels and baton charges do not build public trust, the Panchkula Police have concluded a high-intensity, two-day "Soft Skills" boot camp designed to teach frontline personnel how to de-escalate, communicate, and endure stress before force becomes the only option. The programme signals a deliberate tactical pivot: from crowd control to crowd conversation.
Held at the Police Lines GO Mess under the direct initiative of Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain, IPS, the workshop, titled "Soft Skills: Advanced Techniques in People Management," wrapped up on Friday with DCP Crime & Traffic Amrinder Singh reviewing the outcomes.
Personnel from the Traffic Police, police stations, and police posts across the district were trained to handle hostile streets, angry complainants, and high-stress intersections without losing professional composure.
"Policing does not end at the edge of the law; it begins with the ability to look a citizen in the eye and speak with patience," Nain said, framing the exercise as a structural investment rather than a ceremonial workshop. "Firmness in enforcement and sensitivity in behaviour are not opposites. If our personnel crack under pressure, justice cracks with them."
The training was conducted by Preeti Singh, Founder and CEO of Thrive Skills Studio, who put officers through modules on emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and respectful assertiveness.
DCP Panchkula Aditi Singh, IPS, said the curriculum was built around the realities of daily beat duty: a traffic constable absorbing road rage at a clogged junction, a station writer facing a barrage of panic over a delayed FIR, or a beat officer caught between warring neighbours.
For Traffic Police personnel, the sessions carried immediate operational value. Tasked daily with volatile motorists, chaotic crossings, and aggressive confrontations, they were trained to replace reactive aggression with calibrated communication. Station staff, who serve as the first gatekeepers of justice for complainants, were taught to convert terse bureaucratic reflexes into structured, empathetic engagement that prevents disputes from snowballing.
DCP Amrinder Singh, who supervised the concluding session, said the modern cop is half constable, half counsellor. "Our personnel meet the public at their worst moments: accidents, fights, losses, and delays. If we respond with impatience, we plant the seed of public hatred. If we respond with skill, we harvest cooperation," he said.
The programme also carried an unspoken warning to the rank and file: in an era of viral videos and instant online outrage, every roadside exchange is a reputation test. A single rude gesture or stressed-out outburst can undo years of departmental credibility. By institutionalising emotional intelligence, Panchkula Police are effectively armour-plating their public image.
Among the officers who underwent the training were ACP Traffic Surender Singh, City Traffic SHO Varinder Kumar, and personnel drawn from multiple police stations and posts. Officials confirmed that such capacity-building modules will now be embedded into the district's routine training calendar, making "soft power" a hard mandate across the force. UNI KK CDS
