Relief for washer men, Dhobi ghat water charges changed from commercial to domestic in NDMC area

New Delhi, Sept 22 (UNI) Water connections that were registered in the commercial categ ory across the Dhobi Ghats (washer men's places) in the area under the New Delhi Municipal Council (MDMC) have been converted to the domestic category, said Delhi Minister and MLA from New Delhi Assembly constituency, Parvesh Sahib Singh.
The move is aimed at providing relief from the burden of long pending dues and make the entire system more reasonable, and also reduce the burden of the water bill on washermen who operate at the dedicated areas in the NDMC limits,
According to the Minister, the one-time amnesty scheme for domestic and Dhobi Ghat water consumers has also been approved.
The move was decided in the sixth meeting of the NDMC, along with several key decisions taken to enhance regional development and improve civic facilities.
The new, reworked billing arrangement will remove water charges calculated using the earlier method which involved a 2.5-times multiplication factor, providing relief for the washermen.
The open air dhobi ghats in the New Delhi started coming into the picture prior independence, when the British had come up with the infrastructure, developing the Lutyens' Delhi
The network of washermen grew later, becoming an important service community catering to hospitals, and several other establishments.
Meanwhile, according to Parvesh Sahib Singh, approval has also been granted for constructing a new water supply control room to strengthen the water supply system, replacing old pipelines, rehabilitating and de-silting the old sewer network, and arranging state-of-the-art water-recycling-equipped sewer cleaning machines.
