Seema ends 16-year wait, wins historic 10,000m bronze for India

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 24 (UNI) Seema Kumari ended India’s 16-year wait for a women’s 10,000m medal at the Asian Games, producing a determined run to clinch bronze in a gruelling final here on Thursday.
Seema clocked 32:50.05 to secure third place, staying firmly in medal contention until the closing stages before the experienced front-runners pulled away.
Bahrain’s Olympic champion Winfred Yavi surged clear late in the race to take gold in 32:39.18, while Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka finished second in 32:41.54.
Seema refused to surrender her position as the race entered its decisive phase and held on for a landmark bronze, becoming the first Indian woman in 16 years to stand on the Asian Games podium in the 10,000m.
The result capped a significant rise for the Himachal Pradesh-born distance runner, who has established herself as a leading Indian performer in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
The 25-year-old had arrived at the Games in encouraging form. She clocked a personal best of 32:02.43 at The TEN in California in March and followed it by lowering her 5,000m personal best to 15:16.20 in April.
Her Aichi-Nagoya performance now gives India a long-awaited medal in one of athletics’ most demanding track events.
For Seema, the bronze represents the culmination of a steady progression on the national and international circuit and places her among the country’s notable performers in women’s distance running.
