Suicide blast in Pakistan's KPK claims 12 lives

Islamabad, Sep 26 (UNI) At least 12 people were killed and 35 others injured on Saturday when a vehicle laden with explosives was rammed into a police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan in northwestern Pakistan. Separately, two rescue workers were killed when an ambulance transporting the bodies of the blast victims came under fire.
The attack involved an explosives-laden vehicle at the checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service, Dawn reported.
The deceased comprised nine men, two women and a minor.
According to police and Rescue 1122 officials, an unidentified attacker rammed the explosives-laden tractor trolley into the checkpost.
DI Khan District Police Officer (DPO) Ziauddin Ahmed confirmed that it was a suicide blast.
Faizi said gunmen targeted an ambulance as emergency workers transported victims to a nearby hospital.
The Pakistani Taliban, formally known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack.
The blast destroyed a large portion of the checkpost and completely demolished a house adjacent to the post. The intensity was such that it was heard over a considerable distance, according to officials. Heavy firing was also heard following the blast.
Pakistan has faced a stark rise in militant violence in the past few years which has been attributed to either the TTP or the separatist forces of the Baloch Liberation Army.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned Saturday’s attack and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
Zardari called for intensified action against the TTP, which he accused of carrying out “heinous and brutal acts” with foreign support.
Pakistani authorities have repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government of allowing TTP members to operate from Afghan territory and have demanded that Kabul prevent cross-border attacks.
Afghan authorities deny allowing their territory to be used for attacks against other countries.
Saturday’s bombing came two days after fighting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border that killed at least 13 Afghan Taliban fighters, according to Pakistan’s government.
The clashes followed Pakistani cross-border strikes this week on suspected militant hideouts inside Afghanistan.
Dera Ismail Khan lies near South Waziristan, a former militant stronghold where Pakistan’s military has carried out several operations.
Militants have frequently targeted security forces in the region.
In December 2023, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the main gate of a police station in Dera Ismail Khan, killing at least 23 security personnel. Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, a small militant group believed to be an offshoot of the TTP, had claimed responsibility.
