Telangana Dy CM Bhatti unveils plan to strengthen Singareni, cut production costs

Hyderabad, Oct 25 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Sunday directed Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) officials to reduce coal production costs, develop new mines and diversify into critical minerals to strengthen the state-owned coal company and secure employment for future generations.
Addressing an interaction with 66 General Managers of Singareni at Praja Bhavan here, Bhatti said the government was taking steps to protect the organisation and improve its long-term financial viability, while criticising the previous government for allegedly neglecting the company’s expansion and failing to secure adequate coal blocks.
He said about 42,000 permanent employees and another 34,000 to 36,000 contract and outsourced workers depended on Singareni for their livelihoods, making its financial sustainability and future growth crucial.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that rising production costs could make Singareni’s coal uncompetitive in the market and directed officials to improve productivity, optimise the use of manpower and machinery, and adopt efficient work practices.
He said the company should explore opportunities in critical minerals, including copper, gold, vanadium and lithium, by leveraging its mining expertise. He also suggested engaging international consultants and conducting feasibility studies before investing in new sectors.
Referring to coal supply issues, Bhatti said the availability of coal blocks, production capacity and supply agreements with power projects needed to be examined before holding Singareni responsible for shortages. Coal allocations should have been secured when power projects were planned, he said, adding that the quality and grade of coal depended on the reserves available in the mines.
He said some coal blocks previously allocated to Singareni had been brought back into the auction process and that he had held discussions with senior officials of the union Coal Ministry to press for the state-owned company’s interests.
Criticising the previous government, Bhatti alleged that its failure to facilitate expansion over the past decade had affected Singareni’s growth prospects. He questioned those now criticising the company over its performance, coal production and alleged shortages, asking them to explain their decisions during their tenure.
He said the government had consulted General Managers and workers’ unions while taking decisions concerning the company’s future and urged officials to identify field-level problems and offer practical solutions.
Bhatti also asked Singareni to assess the long-term implications of the shift towards renewable energy, battery storage and pumped storage projects on thermal power generation and coal demand.
Singareni Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Buddha Prakash said the company was working under the state government’s guidance to emerge as a leading organisation in the country.
He described the interaction with General Managers as a first in the company’s history.
The CMD said steps had been taken since the formation of the present government to secure new coal mines, pursue a new thermal power station at Jaipur and introduce welfare initiatives for permanent and contract workers.
A progress report covering the company’s activities since December 2023 was presented at the meeting, along with videos highlighting its achievements and ongoing initiatives.
