Türkiye, France sign defence roadmap to deepen ties between NATO allies

Ankara, Oct 3 (UNI) Türkiye and France have signed a "Defense Cooperation Roadmap" aimed at strengthening defence ties and strategic dialogue between the two NATO allies, Türkiye's Defence Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry said the agreement showed that "the mutual positive messages recently conveyed by the leaders of the two countries have been transformed into a meaningful and concrete step of cooperation in the defense field."
The roadmap was signed after high-level talks between Lieutenant General Ilkay Altindag, Türkiye's director general for defence and security, and French Minister Delegate for the Armed Forces Alice Rufo, General Vincent Giraud, military chief of staff to French President Emmanuel Macron, and Guillaume Ollagnier, director general for international relations and strategy at the French Defence Ministry.
"During the talks, bilateral defense and military relations, strategic dialogue and opportunities to develop existing cooperation were discussed; the importance of maintaining regular and result-oriented contacts was confirmed," the Turkish ministry said.
"The Roadmap aims to strengthen strategic dialogue through regular and result-oriented contacts and to further advance cooperation based on the mutual benefit of the two countries," it added.
The agreement comes as Ankara and Paris discuss closer defence cooperation, including Türkiye's potential purchase of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T air defence system and Meteor missiles. France has recently been reported to have softened its previous opposition to the sale of the SAMP/T system to Türkiye.
The Turkish Defence Ministry did not say whether the roadmap includes specific weapons procurement or other defence contracts.
Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler said in June that Ankara was evaluating options to meet its air-defence requirements, including potential purchases of US Patriot systems or SAMP/T, and is open to arrangements involving technology transfer and joint production.
Italy deployed a SAMP/T system to Türkiye in mid-June as part of NATO defence planning.Türkiye, France and Italy began cooperating on a possible long-range air-defence programme in 2017-18.
The SAMP/T system is produced by Franco-Italian consortium Eurosam and is widely regarded as a European counterpart to the U.S.-made Patriot air-defence system.
The roadmap is also intended to institutionalise regular military and strategic contacts between Ankara and Paris, the Turkish ministry said. UNI AAB
