US death row inmate Christa Pike discharged from hospital after botched execution

Nashville, Oct 10 (UNI) US death row inmate Christa Pike has been discharged from hospital and returned to the Tennessee prison where she has spent the past 30 years, following a failed execution attempt last month, her lawyers said on Saturday.
The 50-year-old was left in a critical condition after surviving two injections of the lethal drug pentobarbital on 30 September. She regained consciousness and began speaking earlier this week, surprising medical staff, execution experts and her legal team.
“She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” her lawyers said in a statement, adding that she would continue receiving medical treatment in prison.
Pike’s case has entered uncharted legal territory, as she is believed to be the first person to have survived an execution attempt involving lethal injection. Whether Tennessee will attempt to execute her again remains unclear.
At a court hearing on Wednesday, Tennessee Assistant Attorney General Will Ayers told the now whether the state intended to make another attempt. The judge also ordered officials to preserve all evidence related to the failed injections, potentially laying the groundwork for future legal action against the state.
Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, tortured and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom they had met at a job training camp for young people from low-income backgrounds.
Following the failed execution, Pike lost consciousness and was taken to a local hospital. Her lawyers initially believed she was brain dead and expected doctors to withdraw life support.
However, she regained consciousness and began speaking on Tuesday. Her lawyer, Randy Spivey, said her first questions were: “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”
At a press conference on Wednesday, her lawyers said Pike had been shackled to her hospital bed and was suffering from pneumonia, severe swelling in her arms and an inability to swallow.
“We don’t know the toll all of this will take” on her mental health, Spivey said at the time, describing her as “angry and confused”.
It remains unclear what medical treatment Pike is receiving following her return to prison. Her lawyers have previously warned that she faces a long recovery.
