Uttarakhand stops Friday offs for govt-affiliated madrasas

Prithviraj Singh
Dehradun, Oct 21 (UNI) The Pushkar Singh Dhami government of Uttarakhand has stopped the Friday weekly offs of Madrasas affiliated to it.
The decision was taken by the state education department after a directive issued by the State Minority Education Authority(SMEA) in this regard.
Around 206 madrasas that have either obtained or applied for recognition from the state education department will no longer have their weekly off on Fridays.
They will have to follow standard weekly holiday system as observed by other schools.
Officials of the state education department have informed that SMEA has written to them with instructions for necessary action over rescheduling the weekly holidays for government madrasas from Fridays to Sundays.
The Authority's letter clarified that madrasas seeking or have already been given recognition from the education department must comply with every aspect of the prescribed educational framework of the state.
In line with this, the provision for Friday holidays is being revised.
According to the SMEA advisory, the revised rule will help madrasas align with the state's mainstream education system.
The Letter read that the Authority's objective was to bring madrasa education curriculum at par with prescribed academic standards and integrate minority students into the mainstream education system of the state.
It's notable that so far the State Education Department has granted recognition to 76 madrasas in the state.
Of these 44 are from Haridwar, 24 from Udham Singh Nagar, six madrasas from Dehradun and two are from district Nainital.
Apart from these, 114 other madrasas have applied to the department for recognition.
If the pending applications for recognition are cleared, over 30,000 children from 206 madrasas in the state will soon become part of the mainstream education system.
SMEA chairman Dr Surjit Singh Gandhi informed, "Prior to getting recognition from the Education Department, madrasas observed their weekly offs on Fridays. It was observed that even after getting recognition from the Education Department and SMEA, a few of them continued with their weekly offs on Fridays.
"Now a letter has been written to the Director General School Education, to stop this."
Gandhi stated that more than 30,000 children across 206 madrasas have joined mainstream education in the state so far. Earlier, madrasas focused only on imparting religious education to their students but now they are following the state's school education curriculum as well.
"Madrasas have been granted recognition as normal schools in the state. Now they have to abide by the rules applicable to government schools. Action will be taken against them as per law on their failure to comply with the norms" said Kunwar Singh Rawat Director, State Elementary Education.
