We Did Not Bend the Knee’: Pezeshkian’s Defiant UN Address Puts Iran’s Wartime Grief Before the World

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) In a hall built to give the world’s nations a voice, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian brought with him the faces of the dead.
Holding aloft large photographs of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and more than 150 Iranian schoolchildren killed in the opening days of the war, Pezeshkian transformed his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday into an intensely emotional defence of a nation under fire.
His message was unmistakable: Iran, he said, had been attacked, its people had suffered and, despite the devastation, it had refused to surrender.
“We have only defended ourselves. We are not terrorists,” Pezeshkian told the world body, describing the attacks on Iran as “cowardly attacks and aggressions imposed upon our country”. He accused the United States and Israel of attacking Iran and said his country had defended itself “with utmost strength”.
Then came the words that captured the defiance running through his speech: “Yes, they did hit us, but we did not bend the knee.”
It was a remarkable moment of confrontation and symbolism. The Iranian president was speaking barely 24 hours after US President Donald Trump had stood at the same podium and posed what he described as a stark choice — whether to reach a deal with Tehran or “annihilate the Islamic Republic”. Trump had also said the United States could drive Iran “into hell” if no agreement was reached.
Pezeshkian answered not with an announcement of surrender, but with the language of resistance, grief and, ultimately, an opening to diplomacy.
Near the end of his address, he directly invoked Trump’s name.
“It must be understood by Mr. Trump and those who seek to bully us that we are ready for dialogue and diplomacy and negotiations without accepting the language of force,” he said.
The words carried particular weight because they came at a moment when the rhetoric of war had reached one of its most dangerous levels. For months, Washington and Tehran have moved between threats and tentative diplomatic contacts, with negotiations repeatedly faltering as military confrontation continued. Yet even amid the defiance, Pezeshkian left the door to dialogue visibly open.
His address was therefore not simply a wartime denunciation of the United States and Israel. It was also an attempt to draw a line between resistance and surrender: Iran, he said, could negotiate, but not under the threat of force.
The photographs he carried into the Assembly gave that argument a human face.
More than 150 Iranian schoolchildren killed during the opening days of the conflict became, for a moment, the silent witnesses to his speech. Their images stood in stark contrast to the language of military calculations, strategic objectives and geopolitical bargaining that has dominated the conflict.
For Pezeshkian, the war was not an abstraction. It was measured in children, families and lives lost.
“My people have been victims of terrorism,” he declared, accusing the United States of carrying out attacks against Iran.
The Iranian president’s account represents Tehran’s position in the conflict, while the United States has portrayed its military campaign as a necessary effort to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and to address what Washington describes as an imminent security threat. Trump defended the US action in his own UN address on Tuesday.
The competing narratives collided dramatically inside the UN: one president warning of annihilation, another displaying photographs of children killed in war and declaring that his country would not bow.
The conflict has also increasingly threatened the wider region. The Strait of Hormuz — one of the world's most important energy shipping routes — has become a major flashpoint, with continuing dangers to commercial traffic as the war drags into its seventh month. Pezeshkian warned that the permanent deployment of hostile fleets and expansion of the conflict would not bring peace.
Yet beneath the anger was a striking contradiction: even as Washington and Tehran traded threats, diplomatic contacts had not entirely disappeared. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Iranian officials on the sidelines of the UN gathering, with Trump describing the encounter as a “very good meeting”. Iranian officials confirmed that contact had taken place through Qatari mediation, although Tehran maintained that its negotiating position had not changed.
That fragile diplomatic thread now runs through a landscape scarred by months of war.
And so, as the Iranian president stood before the nations of the world, the photographs in his hands arguably spoke as loudly as his words. They represented the human cost behind the geopolitical confrontation — lives that cannot be negotiated back, childhoods that cannot be restored and families left carrying the weight of a war they did not choose.
Pezeshkian did not offer surrender. Nor did he close the door to peace.
Instead, he delivered a message forged in the language of a nation under attack: Iran would talk, he said, but it would not negotiate on its knees.
“We will never bow our head or bend at the knee,” he declared, while insisting that diplomacy remained possible without the “language of force”.
In a UN chamber accustomed to declarations of power, it was a speech that sought to make the world look beyond missiles, military alliances and threats — and see, instead, the faces of those caught beneath them. UNI SKA CDS
