Malappuram, May 9 (UNI) Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced that 49 persons who were in contact with a confirmed Nipah infected 42-year-old woman patient in Malappuram district are under observation.
Samples from six symptomatic individuals have been sent for testing. Five with mild symptoms have been admitted to isolation at Manjeri Medical College. Additionally, a staff nurse from Ernakulam working at Perinthalmanna Hospital is also in isolation, and her samples have been collected.
Minister Veena George said after chaired a core meeting at the Collectorate Conference Hall, here on Friday, that among those under observation, 45 are classified as high-risk, including 12 close family members.
The high-risk group includes 25 at Perinthalmanna Hospital, three at Valanchery Primary Health Center, one at a doctor’s clinic in Valanchery, two in separate labs, two in a medical center while four others fall under the low-risk category.
The minister directed the District Collector and District Medical Officer (DMO) to take strict action under the Disaster Management Act and the Public Health Act against individuals who withhold information from health authorities.
As the patient remains in critical condition, preventive measures are being intensified. The Animal Husbandry Department has been instructed to send samples from a cat that died in a neighboring house for testing at a Bhopal lab following a postmortem, to check for Nipah antibodies.
Masks have been made mandatory in public spaces across the district. A route map has been published based on interactions with the patient’s relatives, and CCTV footage from locations visited since April 25 is being collected.
The Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's district level programme schedule at Malappuram district on May 12 and the anti-drug awareness tour led by the Kerala Sports Minister V Abdu Rahiman scheduled for tomorrow, have been postponed due to the Nipah Virus case reported from the district.
Meanwhile, the state government's Entee Keralam programme at Kottakunnu will continue with strict restrictions, as it is already underway. Containment zones will be under strict restrictions from 8 am to 6 pm, Minister Veena George said.
