AIADMK stages walk out from TN Assembly

Chennai, Apr 22 (UNI) The main Opposition AIADMK staged a walk out from the
Tamil Nadu Assembly after Speaker M.Appavu refused permission to its Leader
to speak on Tuesday after heated arguments with the Chair.
Soon after Question Hour, when the debate on the demand for grants for Electricity,
Prohibition and Excise department was taken up, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK
General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami rose to speak.
However, the Speaker refused permission stating that his name does not figure in the
list of members who were scheduled to speak on the debate.
Mr Palaniswami also sought to know why the House was afraid on allowing him to speak
on the debate (in the context of the R 1,000 crore scam unearthed by ED during the recent
raids) when the demand for this department was taken up.
Citing the Assembly rules, the Speaker, said none was afraid of him and that he would not
allow Mr Palaniswami to speak as his name was not on the list and said whatever he wanted
to say could be conveyed by his party MLAs who were listed to speak on the debate.
Not accepting it, the AIADMK members created ruckus and disrupted the proceedings
and an heated argument ensued between them and the Chair.
As the Speaker remained unrelented and refused permission, the AIADMK members staged
a noisy walk out from the Assembly.
Later, talking to reporters outside the Assembly premises, Mr Palaniswami said being the
Leader of the Opposition he was not allowed to speak on an important issue when the demand
for grants for Prohibition department, in which ED had unearthed the scam, was taken up.
