Bengaluru docs restore woman's mobility with advanced ankle surgery

Bengaluru, Mar 25 (UNI) In a significant medical breakthrough, Narayana Health City has successfully conducted Bengaluru’s first-ever new generation mobile bearing Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) surgery, bringing renewed hope to patients suffering from severe ankle arthritis.
The pioneering surgery was performed on a 64-year-old woman by Dr Shekar Mudramaiah, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Foot & Ankle Specialist. The patient, who had endured years of intense pain and restricted mobility, sought an alternative to ankle fusion, a procedure that relieves pain but permanently stiffens the joint.
Upon consultation at Narayana Health City, Dr Mudramaiah recommended Total Ankle Replacement, a complex procedure that restores natural movement by replacing the damaged joint with an artificial implant. The specialised implants, sourced from the USA and the Netherlands, were procured with necessary approvals from the Drug Control Authority of India.
The surgery, performed a few months ago, was a resounding success. The patient started moving with support within a day, her surgical wound healed within two weeks, and she regained independent walking in six weeks. Now, she leads a pain-free and active life.
Dr Mudramaiah stated, "Ankle arthritis can be as debilitating as knee or hip arthritis. This milestone surgery offers patients a movement-preserving solution, eliminating the need for ankle fusion."
The success of this TAR surgery sets a benchmark for orthopaedic care in India, making advanced treatments more accessible to patients who previously had to seek them abroad.
