Patna, Mar 24 (UNI) Leader of the opposition in the Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Monday said that Bihar was among the top states of the country in taking loans during the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Yadav, also a senior RJD leader, while participating in a debate on the Bihar Appropriation Bill 2025 in the House, said that during the regime of the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the state government had taken loans which were 38.6 percent of GDP of Bihar.
As per an estimate, every Bihari had a debt burden of Rs 25,000 each,he pointed out.
The RJD leader said that Rs 20,526 crores were being paid as interest onloans taken by the Bihar government from various sources. It was 7.5 per cent of Bihar budget, he added.
Yadav said that the budgetary size of Bihar had been increased by Rs 39,000 crores during the financial year 2025-25 over the previous financial year. He asked the government to reply whether the state resources had increased so much to spend the amount as per the provision made in the budget.
"There is virtually no increase in state resources of Bihar, but the NDA government has increased the budgetary allocation by Rs 39,000 crores just to take political advantage," the RJD leader said, adding that revenue earned by the Bihar government through its own sources was only 27 percent. It was a complete failure of the NDA government led by Chief Minister Kumar, he alleged.
"Gujarat has the capacity to raise 73 per cent of its budget revenue through its internal sources, while Tamil Nadu raises 76 percent ", Yadav said, adding that even neighbouring state Uttar Pradesh raises 46 per cent of the revenue of its total budget.
Instead of taking loans and increasing the burden of debts on people of Bihar, government should make efforts to increase its own resources, he suggested.
