Cong slams Bandi Sanjay’s ‘Hindutva’ pitch in Hyd MLC Polls, to file complaint with EC

Hyderabad, Apr 22 (UNI) Telangana Transport Minister and Hyderabad In-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday came down heavily on Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, accusing him of violating the election code by making provocative religious statements in the run-up to the Hyderabad Local Body MLC elections.
Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan, Prabhakar said the Congress will file a formal complaint with the Election Commission, demanding immediate action.
Prabhakar strongly condemned Bandi Sanjay’s public appeal that “Hindutva supporters should vote for the BJP”, calling it a direct attempt to polarise voters on religious lines.
“If you don’t vote for BJP, aren’t you a Hindu? Is that the message being given?” he questioned, stating that such rhetoric is dangerous and undermines the democratic and secular ethos of the Constitution.
He pointed out that the Hyderabad local body MLC constituency comprises only 112 votes, and no single party other than MIM (with 50 votes) holds a clear majority.
“BJP and BRS each have only 24 votes, and Congress has 14. With BRS boycotting the election, BJP’s campaign based on religious identity is not just misleading but also futile,” he said.
The Congress minister alleged that flex banners are being put up outside the residences of Congress and BRS corporators, with the intention of intimidating and influencing voters using communal messaging.
“This is not about development or governance; this is about inciting on religious lines to gain power,” he stated.
He further reiterated that Congress believes in democracy, while accusing the BJP of following an authoritarian path.
“They provoke with one hand and defend with the other. If BJP was truly honest, they would suspend their MP Nishikant Dubey for his remarks against the Constitution and the judiciary, instead of just offering symbolic condemnation,” Prabhakar added.
Highlighting Congress' commitment to constitutional values, he said, “We have launched the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ campaign across the country to protect the very soul of our democracy.
The BJP, on the other hand, is trying to turn elections into religious battlegrounds, which is a direct threat to the Constitution.”Calling on the Election Commission to act decisively, Prabhakar said that religious appeals in elections cannot be tolerated.
“The Hyderabad MLC elections should not become a stage for Hindutva politics. We will not allow it, and we will fight to uphold democracy,” he declared.
