Donald Trump says Canada ‘would cease to exist without US’

Washington/Ottawa, Apr 24 (UNI) Days ahead of Canada’s national election, US President Donald Trump has said “Canada would cease to exist as a country without the United States.”Trump's latest comment is only a virtual reiteration of his oft-repeated public statements about Ottawa’s territorial and economic sovereignty, which have emerged as a significant poll issue, alongside the global tariff war.
Claiming that Canada’s very existence was dependent on the American purchase of Canadian goods, Trump said the US didn’t actually need anything from the neighbour.
“I have to be honest, as a state, it works great,” said Trump, who previously threatened to make the country the 51st state through economic coercion, according to the South China Morning Post.
“We don’t really want Canada to make cars for us, to put it bluntly. We want to make our own cars,” he added.
“So when I put tariffs on Canada, they’re paying 25 per cent, but that could go up in terms of cars. When we put tariffs on, all we’re doing is we’re saying, ‘We don’t want your cars in all due respect.’”
The principal contestants in the Prime Ministerial race in Canada are Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre and Liberal Party Leader and current Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Canadian PM said last week that eliminating trade barriers within Canada would benefit his countrymen far more than Trump can ever take away with his trade war.
Carney has set a goal of free trade within the country’s 10 provinces and three territories by July 1. Canada has long had interprovincial trade barriers.
“We can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump can ever take away,” Carney said. “We can have one economy. This is within our grasp.”
The elections are scheduled for April 28. UNI ANV SSP
