Pak diplomat claims India’s decision to suspend Indus Water Treaty ‘symbolic’

Islamabad, Apr 24 (UNI) Former Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit on Thursday claimed that India’s decision to revoke the Indus Water Treaty was more ‘symbolic’ than literal.
In an interview with the Express Tribune, Basit claimed that New Delhi’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty was more “symbolic” than literal, believing that at this point in time, the Indus waters can’t be stopped due to India’s current lack of infrastructure to divert the western rivers.
“At this stage, India cannot stop the flow of water,” he said. “The Indus Waters Treaty can neither be terminated, nor suspended, nor amended unilaterally. It’s a permanent treaty unless both parties agree.”
However, the very announcement by India has triggered panic in Pakistan, with its National Security Committee stating that any attempt to stop the flow of river waters by India would be tantamount to an "act of war".
Regarding the closing of the Attari-Wagah border, he said that bilateral trade between the two countries had already been suspended, and therefore, the issue holds no particular importance for Pakistan.
The diplomat suggested that Pakistani authorities brace for further law and order destabilisation, particularly in Balochistan. The province has been witnessing intense fighting, as separatist Baloch forces have been relentlessly attacking the military, in response to the country’s shabby treatment of Balochis. UNI ANV SSPAC
