Green activist seeks neutral probe into illegal felling of 5,000 khair trees in Himachal's Trilokpur

Nahan, May 14 (UNI) Environmentalist and social worker Nathuram Chauhan has raised serious concerns over the ongoing investigation into the illegal felling of more than 5,000 khair trees in the forest area near Trilokpur, located in the Nahan Assembly constituency, and alleged a deliberate cover-up attempt.
Addressing the media at the Sirmaur district headquarters on Wednesday, Chauhan alleged a deliberate cover-up attempt by the local forest and administrative authorities.
Chauhan, who initially filed the complaint in the matter, noted that the Himachal Pradesh High Court had already taken suo motu cognizance of the illegal activity and directed the state government to submit a report by May 27.
However, Chauhan questioned the credibility of the probe being conducted, alleging that the very officers and staff responsible for the dereliction of duty have now been assigned to investigate the case.
“It is shocking and unacceptable that those who are being investigated are also part of the investigating team,” he said. “How can we expect a fair report when the accused are sitting in judgment over themselves?”
He further alleged that efforts were being made to destroy evidence at the site. “Labourers from Uttar Pradesh have been brought in to refill the areas where the khair trees were uprooted.
"This is a deliberate ploy to erase any physical trace of the crime,” Chauhan claimed, adding that these actions show a clear intention to mislead the court and shield those involved in the large-scale green felling.
Demanding a high-level and neutral investigation, Chauhan called on the state government to ensure that independent officials or a judicial committee is appointed to probe the matter.
He stressed that allowing local officials to handle the case would only result in a whitewash, denying justice and allowing the destruction of forest wealth to continue unchecked.
“The High Court has taken the issue seriously, and it is the responsibility of the state to respect that trust and act transparently. Otherwise, the entire process will lose public confidence,” Chauhan warned.
The illegal khair felling incident has sparked environmental and legal concerns in the region, with increasing demands from civil society for accountability and strict action against those involved in what appears to be a deep-rooted nexus of corruption and negligence.
