Himachal: Minority protest in Shimla over Wakaf Amendment

Shimla, Apr 30 (UNI) A peaceful symbolic protest was observed in parts of Shimla on Wednesday following a nationwide call given by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) against the recent amendments to the Wakaf Board Act.
The Board had urged members of the Muslim community to switch off lights in their homes and mosques for 15 minutes, from 9:00 PM to 9:15 PM, as a mark of dissent against the changes in the law, which they allege undermine community rights over religious properties.
According to the report submitted by Sadar Police Station, the protest in Shimla saw mixed participation. Lights were turned off at the Jama Masjid and Eidgah located in Lakkar Bazar, signifying support for the Board's call.
However, other mosques falling under the Sadar police jurisdiction reportedly did not participate in the blackout.
Moreover, police sources indicated that a significant number of Muslim families residing in private homes chose to comply with the appeal.
The protest remained peaceful and did not disrupt public order. The symbolic nature of the protest, limited to a 15-minute lights-off demonstration, ensured that normal life in the city was not affected.
The Wakaf Board Amendment Act has stirred a debate across the country, with sections of the community viewing it as an encroachment on religious autonomy, while others see it as a much-needed reform to improve transparency and governance of Wakaf assets.
Police confirmed that the situation in Shimla remained under control and no untoward incidents were reported.
