India emerges as global hub for mid-market GCCs, Hyd among top talent destinations: NASSCOM

Hyderabad, Apr 22 (UNI) Mid-market Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are fast becoming the heartbeat of innovation and digital transformation within India’s booming tech industry.
According to a new report released by Nasscom and Zinnov titled ‘India’s GCC Leap: Capturing Global Mid-Market Momentum’, these agile and specialised centres are redefining India’s role in global enterprise strategy.
Currently, India is home to over 480 mid-market GCCs, employing more than 210,000 professionals and operating across 680 units. These centres account for 27 per cent of all GCCs and 22 per cent of the total GCC units in the country. In just the past two years, over 45 new mid-market GCCs have been established, comprising 35% of new GCCs and 30 per cent of new units — highlighting their growing influence.
Despite operating at nearly 40 per cent of the scale of their larger counterparts, mid-market GCCs are consistently outperforming in key areas. These include product innovation, enterprise agility, and digital transformation, with a 1.3x higher likelihood of being transformation hubs and a 1.2x faster climb up the maturity curve.
“Mid-market GCCs are no longer just delivery arms. They are becoming cultural innovation labs and strategic value centres,” said Rajesh Nambiar, President of Nasscom. “The next wave of global capability is driven not by size, but by speed, specialisation, and strategic intent.”
India currently houses 47 per cent of global product management talent for mid-market GCCs and more than 25 per cent of their DeepTech workforce. Nearly 60 per cent of end-to-end product and platform ownership within global enterprises — particularly in engineering, research, and development — is being driven from India. These centres are also pioneering shifts in hiring practices, performance metrics, and organisational culture.
Pari Natarajan, CEO of Zinnov, emphasised the evolving role of these centres: “The most underrated transformation in India’s tech landscape is the rise of mid-market GCCs. These aren’t scaled-down versions of large enterprises; they’re rewriting the rules. With GCC-as-a-service models and innovation hubs emerging in Tier-2 cities, India is becoming the birthplace of digital-native enterprises.”
In terms of geographic distribution, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, NCR, and Chennai have emerged as top destinations, accounting for 74 per cent of all new mid-market GCC units. Hyderabad alone has contributed to 25 per cent of mid-market GCC talent growth over the past five years, reinforcing its status as a leading innovation and talent hotspot.
However, the report also outlines challenges. Mid-market GCCs often struggle with brand visibility, especially in top-tier campuses, and face operational inefficiencies due to lack of standardised processes. Weak linkages with academic institutions, startups, and innovation ecosystems further limit their potential impact.
Despite these hurdles, the growth trajectory is strong. Globally, there are an estimated 130,000 to 150,000 mid-sized companies, with India positioned to attract 30,000 to 40,000 of them, especially from markets like the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Japan.
To fully unlock this opportunity, the report calls for streamlined entry processes, stronger policy support, cost-effective GCC-as-a-service models, and the development of dynamic innovation clusters across the country.
With its expanding talent pool, strategic location, and supportive ecosystem, India, and cities like Hyderabad are poised to lead the next wave of global enterprise innovation.
