Introspect on benefits of SUMP: Arunachal Dy CM amidst China's 60,000 MW Dam plan

Itanagar, Mar 19 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has emphasized the strategic significance of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) over the Siang River, urging people to engage in discussions with the government with a positive mindset.
Highlighting the potential threat posed by China’s planned 60,000 MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, Mein called for serious introspection on the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project’s benefits for Arunachal Pradesh. He underscored the need for a balanced approach that safeguards both regional interests and environmental sustainability while ensuring long-term energy security and economic growth.
The Deputy CM was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the 1894 Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial at Adi Pasi in Upper Siang district on Wednesday. The memorial stands as a tribute to the Adi warriors of Pasi village, who bravely defended their homeland against the British punitive expedition during the 3rd Anglo-Abor War (1893-94) through guerrilla warfare and stone barricades, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and unity.
He called the occasion a historic and proud moment, paying tribute to the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect their land from colonial rule. He emphasized that the war memorial will etch the contributions of Arunachal’s forefathers in India's freedom movement, instilling pride and historical awareness among future generations.
Mein commended the local community for constructing the memorial through their own contributions, calling it an inspiring gesture that honours their forefathers and strengthens Arunachal’s cultural and historical identity.
He highlighted the deep connection between the land and its people, emphasizing the indigenous wisdom that has allowed Arunachal’s ancestors to coexist harmoniously with nature. He called for a balanced approach to development, ensuring that economic progress does not lead to environmental degradation.
“It is our collective responsibility to uphold this legacy. True progress is measured not just by infrastructure and industry, but by how well we preserve our forests, rivers, and biodiversity. Sustainable development ensures that future generations inherit a land as rich and vibrant as our ancestors left for us,” he added.
As Arunachal Pradesh moves toward modernization, initiatives like this memorial play a pivotal role in strengthening cultural identity, fostering environmental responsibility, and instilling pride in the state’s heritage. The memorial stands not just as a tribute to the past but as a guiding light for future generations, ensuring that tradition and progress go hand in hand.
Mein expressed gratitude to Geku-Mariyang MLA Oni Panyang, Dambuk MLA Puinnyo Apum, and the people of Adi Pasi for their dedication to preserving Arunachal’s rich history and ecological balance.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing, Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) president Tadum Libang and secretary general Vijay Taram, Upper Siang DC, SP and ZPC, among others. UNI TD SSP
