Odisha to open “Shishu Vatika” in all Primary Schools as envisaged in NEP 2020

Bhubaneswar, Mar 19 (UNI) The Odisha government will establish “Shishu Vatika” in all primary schools to provide pre-school education for children aged five and above, as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
On April 2, the state will celebrate “Pravesh Utsav” and “Khadi Chhuan” for Class I and Shishu Vatika students in all schools.
Invitation letters, signed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, are being distributed by the District Administration to parents of children eligible for admission to Shishu Vatika classes.
The state government has decided to make this celebration a joyful occasion in every school, featuring various activities.
Odisha plans to implement NEP 2020 in phases, starting from the academic year 2025-26.
In the first phase, the Department of School and Mass Education has announced the adoption of the National Education Policy in the state, incorporating National Curriculum Frameworks with local contextualisation as part of the State Curriculum Framework.
The enrollment age for Grade 1 has been revised to six years and above as of September 1 of the respective academic year.
Additionally, Shishu Vatika classes will be introduced in all primary schools for children aged five and above.
According to official sources, "Jaadui Pitara," developed by NCERT based on the National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage, will be used to enhance early education.
To boost awareness and outreach, NCERT has also launched the e-Jaadui Pitara mobile app, which includes stories, songs, and activities in the Odia language for teachers, parents, and students.
The SECRET has developed a training module called "Prayog," which includes a session on the use of Jaadu Pedi materials. The state government will provide an education kit (Jaadu Pedi) for students in Classes I to V in every primary school.
Following consultations with experts and educationists from different boards, the age of enrollment for Class 1 has been set at six years or above under NEP 2020.
To facilitate this transition, the deadline for completing six years of age has been revised to September 1 instead of March 31.
Under the Shishu Vatika initiative, classes for children aged 5 to 6 years will begin in every school from April 2, utilising existing infrastructure and manpower.
Additionally, the Odisha government plans to introduce new textbooks for Classes 1 to 8, aligning them with NCERT books as per the National Curriculum Framework, starting from the 2026-2027 academic year. UNI DP SSP
