Karnataka: JDS MLA sparks row with free liquor demand

Bengaluru, Mar 19 (UNI) A JDS MLA MT Krishnappa triggered a furore in the Karnataka Assembly by suggesting the state government extend the scope of its freebies by providing two free bottles of liquor every week.
Speaking during a debate late Tuesday evening, Krishnappa said, "You (state government) are giving women Rs 2,000 per month, free electricity and free bus travel. Anyway, it is our money. So, those who drink should be given two bottles of liquor free every week. Let them drink. What is wrong with that?"
His comment drew reactions from several members, with Energy Minister KJ George swiftly responding, "You win the election, form the government and do it. We are trying to make people drink less alcohol."
Opposing the idea, Speaker Khader said, "Without giving two bottles, we are already struggling. What will happen if we give them liquor for free?"
On Krishnappa's claim that many legislators themselves consume alcohol, there was strong opposition, particularly from women legislators.
The exchange sparked a brief uproar in the House, with ruling party members criticising Krishnappa’s statement, calling it "irresponsible". Opposition legislators, however, defended him, stating that his remark was made in a lighter vein.
The recent debate on the proposal underscored the ongoing discourse around Karnataka’s financial policies, which includes extensive welfare schemes under the Congress government.
Earlier, the Congress government had launched initiatives such as free bus travel and cash assistance for women, but the opposition and critics argue they are financially burdensome.
The debate on the government's welfare schemes continued, with the treasury benches asserting that their initiatives were aimed at social upliftment, while the opposition raised concerns about financial prudence and policy priorities. UNI BDN SSP
