TN: History sheeter murdered by gang, police open fire and arrest 4 assailants

Erode, Mar 19 (UNI) Two police personnel, including an Inspector were injured during an armed conflict with a four-member-gang, minutes after the assailants brutally murdered a history-sheeter in broad daylight, forcing the cops to open fire in self defence, injuring three of the gang members, in Erode district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Police said the history-sheeter, identified as John (35) alias Chanakya was hacked to death by an armed gang, when he was coming to Tiruppur from Salem with his wife Saranya in a car at Nasiyanur on the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway in Erode today.
The gang, which followed John in two cars deliberately, rammed their vehicles into the car driven by the deceased.
The gang then attacked John with sickles, killing him on the spot. His wife Saranya sustained injuries when she attempted to save him from the attack and was admitted to a private hospital.
John was returning to Tiruppur after appearing and signing in the Annathanapatti police station in Salem in connection with a case, when he was murdered by the gang.
He has been facing several criminal cases, including attempted murder at various police stations in Salem and recently shifted to Periya Palayam in Tiruppur district from Salem.
Meanwhile, on getting information about the murder a police team led by the Chithode Police Inspector Ravi swiftly intercepted four persons travelling in a car a few minutes after the murder.
When the police attempted to arrest them, the gang attacked the police with sickles inflicting cut injuries to Ravi and a police constable Yogesh.
Ravi opened fire in self defence in which three suspects, identified as Sathish, Saravanan, Bhoopalan suffered bullet injuries, while another person Karthikeyan was unhurt.
The four assailants were arrested subsequently.
The injured police personnel and three suspects were treated at Perundurai government hospital and later referred to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Coimbatore range V.Sasi Mohan visited the hospital and held an inquiry.
He also enquired about the health condition of injured police personnel.
Talking to newsmen, Sasi Mohan said an FIR has been registered and a follow up investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the murder of the history-sheeter and to arrest the remaining culprits.
