Meghalaya orders crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi, Rohingya migrants

Shillong, May 20 (UNI) The Meghalaya government has directed all district heads to identify and arrest Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants residing in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong said the government’s directive was based on the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ order advising state governments and union territories to constitute district special task forces to identify these illegal migrants within 30 days.
“We (state government) have instructed district heads to take immediate action and identify and arrest Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants residing in the state,” Tynsong said.
Moreover, the district task forces are mandated to check the antecedents of people entering the state under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, he said.
“As far as illegal foreigners are concerned, we have already directed all Deputy Commissioners to crackdown and put this on priority basis. The (Foreigners’) Act is being followed strictly,” he said.
