Mizoram's Lai Council political crisis deepens

Aizawl, Mar 30 (UNI) The Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Mizoram is facing a prolonged period of political uncertainty, as the date for a special session to determine the majority of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) executive committee, led by V. Zirsanga, remains undecided.
In a recent development, T. Zakunga, the lone BJP member who switched allegiance to the ZPM legislature party, was elected as Chairman of the LADC in a one-day special session presided over by pro-tem Chairman C. Biakthansangi ¹. Biakthansangi, a nominated woman member of the district council, was appointed as pro-tem chairman by the state governor, Gen. VK Sinha.
V. Zirsanga, appointed by the state governor, took oath as the 19th Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the LADC on February 27. Lawngtlai district DC Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy administered the oath. Nine members of the district council, belonging to the ruling ZPM, were also sworn in as executive members of the executive committee headed by CEM Zirsanga on March 17.
However, the political crisis escalated with the resignation of executive member BN Thangpuia over portfolio allocation issues. Although Thangpuia was appeased with a new portfolio within 24 hours, the stalemate persists. The sudden resignation of LADC Chairman VL Hmuaka and Deputy Chairman H. Lalmuansanga on March 18 further complicated the situation.
According to a notification issued on February 24, Zirsanga must prove his majority in the council within 30 days of his appointment as CEM. The resignations of Hmuaka and Lalmuansanga necessitated the appointment of a pro-tem chairman to enable the election of a new council chairman and convene a special session for the floor test.
