MP Aruna slams Congress Govt over urea crisis

Hyderabad, July 3 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Vice President and Mahabubnagar MP DK Aruna on Thursday came down heavily on the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of misleading farmers by spreading false propaganda about a urea shortage in the state.
In a strongly-worded statement, Aruna condemned both the state government and BRS leaders for blaming the Centre and alleged that the current fertilizer crisis was entirely due to the mismanagement and negligence of the Congress administration.
“It is unfortunate that such a situation exists only in Telangana, where farmers are suffering due to poor planning in fertilizer supply and storage,” she said.
Refuting the claims of a urea shortage, Aruna pointed out that the Central Government had already supplied more than the required quantity for the current Rabi season.
“While the state's requirement is 9.5 lakh metric tonnes of urea, the Centre has already dispatched 12.02 lakh metric tonnes. Similarly, for DAP, the requirement was 1.47 lakh tonnes, but the Centre supplied 1.72 lakh tonnes,” she stated.
She also alleged that the real issue lies in the state government's failure to manage the distribution system effectively. “There are complaints that MARKFED has gone bankrupt and is passing on transport costs to farmers. Cooperative societies are reportedly hoarding fertilizers and diverting them into the black market,” Aruna added.
Calling it “unethical” to blame the Centre, she said the Congress government was trying to deflect attention from its own failures. “The Centre is giving substantial subsidies – Rs 2,236 per urea bag and Rs 2,422 per DAP bag. A farmer with one acre is receiving a fertilizer subsidy worth Rs 9,316 per crop season. With two crops, the amount doubles to Rs 18,632, in addition to Rs 6,000 provided annually under PM-Kisan,” she explained.
Accusing the Congress of exploiting farmers, Aruna said, “Urea, which should be sold at Rs 268, is being charged at a higher price. DAP, meant to be available at Rs 1,311, is also being sold at inflated rates. This is nothing but looting.”
She further criticized the Telangana government for losing Finance Commission funds due to its failure to conduct local body elections, which she said was also impacting the fertilizer distribution mechanism.
Highlighting the Modi government's commitment to agriculture, she said, “The Centre has spent Rs 12.5 lakh crore on fertilizer subsidies in the past decade. Moreover, the defunct Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant in Telangana was revived at a cost of Rs 6,338 crore – a clear sign of the Centre’s intent to support farmers.”
DK Aruna urged the Congress government to stop politicising the issue and focus on resolving the supply chain challenges to ensure farmers receive the support they need on time.
