NCP-Sharad Pawar group attacks Maha govt over making Hindi mandatory in Marathi schools

Mumbai, April 18 (UNI) The Sharad Pawar-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) today attacked the Mahayuti-ruled Maharashtra government for making Hindi language mandatory in Marathi schools from Class 1, terming it as a "direct attack" on the linguistic, cultural and educational autonomy of the state.
Spokesperson and Mumbai President youth NCP-SP, Adv Amol Matele, in a media statement, said that, the central government has recently honored Marathi, the mother tongue of Maharashtra, as an "elite language". At such a time, instead of formulating a policy for the promotion of Marathi, the state government is unnecessarily promoting another language.
Expressing strong opposition to this decision, Adv. Matele has sent a clear warning to the Minister of School Education through an e-mail, demanding that this decision should be withdrawn immediately, otherwise a unique agitation will be launched.
The Maharashtra government had earlier decided to make Marathi subject compulsory for students in all branches till Class 12. But till date it has not been implemented properly. The government was expected to take action in that direction. But on the contrary, there is an attempt to give Marathi a secondary position by making Hindi compulsory in Marathi schools, he pointed out.
"Marathi is not just a language, but the soul of our culture, history and social life. This language has been carrying forward the tradition of our values from generation to generation. Its preservation and promotion is the duty of any responsible government. But the current state government is seen running away from this responsibility," he charged.
The NCP-SP demands that the decision to make Hindi compulsory in Marathi schools should be withdrawn immediately. Marathi subject should be made compulsory for all students till Class 12. Policy programmes should be implemented in accordance with the elite status of Marathi language, he said.
Marathi libraries, literary festivals, and language movements should be started in all government and semi-government schools. An expert committee should be established to maintain the core of Marathi language in the school curriculum.
The government should take a proactive role in the use, development, and awareness of Marathi.
Otherwise, the Youth Nationalist Congress will launch a protest, he threatened.
