Bihar Minister admits presence of arsenic in vegetables and crops cultivated near Ganga

Patna, Mar 20 (UNI) The Bihar government admitted the presence of arsenic in the vegetables and crops cultivated near the river Ganga.
While replying to a short noticed question of BJP member Amrendra Pratap Singh during the pre-lunch sitting in Bihar assembly on Thursday, Agriculture minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said that arsenic is being found in the vegetables and grains of the districts situated on the banks of Ganga in Bihar. Its quantity is much higher than the prescribed limit, he admitted.
Giving details, Sinha said that the leafy vegetables like cabbage and fenugreek have been found to contain 0.1% arsenic per gram, root vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes contain 0.3% arsenic per gram whereas 1 percent arsenic has been found in the other crops.
To this, Singh, dubbing the matter as most serious one said that the water used to irrigate the crops and vegetables grown near Ganga carry arsenic which was hazardous to health and causes serious ailments like cancer. He said even the drinking water is also contaminated with arsenic and the water available was almost black in colour in such areas and was not even worth washing hands.
Through his supplementary, Singh demanded for a fool proof programme for providing safe water for both irrigation and drinking purposes.
The Minister, Sinha said that in view of the seriousness of the issue the agricultural department would discuss it in detail with the related departments including health, PHED and minor irrigation to solve the problem.
