Telangana CM directs immediate public consultation on draft Gig Workers' Bill

Hyderabad, Apr 14 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed that the draft bill aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of Gig workers be made available for public comment immediately.
He emphasised that the final version of the bill should be prepared only after incorporating suggestions and objections from the public.
The Chief Minister held a special meeting with Gig workers, union representatives, and senior officials from various departments at the Secretariat on Monday.
The Labour Department has drafted the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Bill, which aims to provide job security, insurance coverage, and other rights for Gig workers. During the meeting, officials briefed the Chief Minister on the key provisions of the bill.
The Chief Minister suggested several revisions and additions to the draft. He stressed the need for a law that prioritizes workers’ safety while ensuring harmony between workers, companies, and aggregators. He instructed officials to upload the draft bill online without delay and to actively seek feedback from all stakeholders.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the Chief Minister noted that nearly four lakh Gig workers are employed across sectors such as food delivery, transportation, and package delivery in the state. He emphasized the importance of considering inputs from all sections of society.
He also instructed officials to complete the final review of the draft and prepare the final version by April 25, taking into account all public feedback. He added that the bill should be enacted on May 1 — International Workers’ Day — and called for the timely completion of the legislative process.
Revanth Reddy reiterated his pre-election promise to enact legislation protecting Gig and platform workers. He noted that Telangana was the first state in the country to implement accident insurance for Gig workers. On December 30, 2023, the government issued orders providing Rs 5 lakh in accident insurance coverage in the event of a Gig worker’s death. He further stated that the upcoming law should serve as a national model for other states to follow.
Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, Government Advisor Vem Narender Reddy, State Planning Commission Vice Chairman Chinna Reddy, Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari, and Special Chief Secretaries Ramakrishna Rao, Jayesh Ranjan, Sanjay Kumar, along with other senior officials, participated in the meeting, according to an official statement.
