Telangana govt determined to promote sustainable urban development : Minister

Hyderabad, Apr 12 (UNI) Telangana IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Saturday hit back at critics of the Congress government's developmental initiatives, asserting that the administration is committed to eliminating pollution, ensuring clean air, and driving welfare-centric growth across the state.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan, the Minister said, "As soon as the Congress government came to power, we began the cleansing of the Musi River, working responsibly and with a sense of accountability. We are determined to eliminate pollution and promote sustainable urban development."

He accused the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of obstructing development and spreading misinformation. “BRS leaders have become enemies of the state's welfare. They are using social media to conspire against our government and prevent the progress Telangana deserves,” Babu said.

Responding to allegations over the value of lands at the University of Hyderabad (HCU), the Minister clarified that the Supreme Court had already ruled that the HCU lands belong to the government.
“Falsehoods are being spread — a deer calf that died in Rajasthan nine years ago was claimed to have died on HCU land. They even used AI to show elephants roaming the campus. These are deliberate attempts to mislead the public,” he said.

On the valuation of HCU lands, Babu added, “Contrary to KTR's claim that Rs 5,200 crore worth of land was shown as Rs 30,000 crore, a survey by the Security Bureau of India (CBI) pegged the value at Rs 23,000 crore. Moreover, regulatory bodies like SEBI and the RBI have confirmed the process. ICICI Bank did not provide a loan, as falsely claimed.”

The Minister detailed the government's funding strategy, explaining that on December 5, 2024, it raised Rs 9,995 crore through mutual investment bonds issued via the Telangana Government Infrastructure Investment Corporation (TGIIC) at a competitive 9.35 per cent interest rate. A SEBI-registered merchant banker was appointed for the process.

“These funds came from 37 international companies and were used for public welfare: Rs 2,146 crore for farm loan waivers, Rs 5,463 crore for the Rythu Bharosa farmer assurance scheme, and Rs 947 crore for supplying fine rice,” he said. “Unlike BRS, which borrowed at 10.09 per cent from REC, PFC, and Bank of Baroda, our government secured funding at lower interest.”

Sridhar Babu reiterated that the debenture trustee has confirmed that the HCU lands belong to the government and that there are no pending legal disputes in the Supreme Court on the matter.

Slamming BRS for “spitting venom” on developmental issues, the Minister drew comparisons with Gujarat’s Sabarmati Riverfront Development. “The BJP developed Sabarmati to benefit all sections of society. Why doesn’t the BJP want similar development along the Musi River in Hyderabad?” he questioned.

Babu urged the Media Academy Chairman to organise a visit for media representatives to the Sabarmati project site to observe the conditions before and after its development and apply the learnings to the Musi River project.

“Development should not be viewed through the lens of caste or political bias. We welcome suggestions to ensure inclusive growth in Telangana,” he added.
