Chennai, May 9 (UNI) A Civil Defence Mock Exercise as advised by the Union
Home Ministry was held at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Kudankulam in
the southern Tirunelveli District on Friday.
A similar drill was also held today at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station,
Unit-2, Athipattu.
The drills were held from 1600 hrs to 1700 hrs.
The mock drill simulated events to check the preparedness of the Civil Defence
System to handle an air raid in a war kind of emergency.
During the mock exercise protection, safe evacuation and first aid were rehearsed.
The State emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), the District Emergency Operation
Centre (DEOC) at Tiruvallur District, the local Control rooms at Kudankulam Nuclear
Power Plant, North Chennai Thermal Power Station were activated.
The District Officials, State Commando Forces, Home Guards, Tamil Nadu Fire and
Rescue Services, Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response
Force, Central Industrial Security Force and Medical teams participated in the mock
exercise.
In continuation it is proposed to conduct the civil defence mock exercise at the
V.O.Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi District and at the Thoothukudi
Thermal Power Station in Thoothukudi district at 1600 hrs tomorrow.
During this mock drill, activities will be undertaken in these two vital installations to
check the preparedness of the systems to handle any kind of emergency.
The above civil defence exercise is only a mock drill to check the preparedness in
the selected vital installations.
All other functions in other places will go on normally. There is no need for any panic
or apprehension among the public about this exercise, an official release said.
It may be noted that in view of the heavy exchange at the borders and attacks by Pakistan
in J and K and other places prompting the Indian government to launch Operation Sindoor
to dismantle and destroy Pakistan terror camps to avenge the Pahalgam killings, mock
drills to test the defence preparedness of various agencies were being held in major
installations in Tamil Nadu for the last three days.
