Shimla water declared safe; NIV report finds no trace of Hepatitis virus

Shimla, Apr 24 (UNI) The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, has declared Shimla town's water supply safe and of good quality, with no viral contamination.
A recent test report issued on April 9, 2025, confirmed that samples taken from the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) water supply showed no presence of the Hepatitis A and E viral RNA.
The sample, identified as MCS/WS/01, was tested using advanced PCR techniques and returned negative results for both HAV and HEV RNA, indicating no viral contamination.
The report was issued following routine testing of water samples as part of periodic surveillance by NIV. The water specimen was received in good condition and processed on April 7.
The town, which had faced severe outbreaks of water-borne diseases in the past, has seen marked improvements in water quality over the last two to three years.

According to SJPNL spokesperson Sahil Sharma, the consistent quality of water is a result of systematic upgrades and rigorous monitoring.
“We’ve introduced regular inspection routines at pumping stations and adopted multilevel filtration processes. The silt levels are carefully managed through routine desilting of treatment chambers,” Sharma said. “These efforts have ensured a stable and safe water supply, recognized as among the best in the country.”
He added that SJPNL conducts sampling at both scheme and tank levels to monitor the entire supply chain.
Notably, no water-borne disease cases linked to the municipal supply have been recorded in the past three years, barring isolated incidents attributed to local sources.
The city currently supplies about 42 million liters per day (MLD), which is considered optimal for its population needs.
With proactive measures and adherence to national water quality standards, Shimla’s water management appears to be on a positive trajectory, restoring public trust and ensuring healthier living conditions for its residents.
