Steps taken to curb ganja cultivation yielding results in AP : IGP

Eluru, July 3 (UNI) Inspector General of police and chief of Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) Ake Ravi Krishna has made it clear that the efforts of EAGLE to prevent
ganja cultivation and transportation have yielded results as the ganja crop has been destroyed
at many places.

The EAGLE IGP, accompanied by district SP K Pratap Shiva Kishore conducted checking in the railway station as part of prevention of transportation of ganja. Speaking on the occasion, IGP
Ravi Krishna said that so far 21,736 KGs of ganja had been seized across the State.

“Drones and satellite surveys are being used to find out the location of ganja cultivation in Alluri Sitarama Raju district. Vigil has been laid on 359 drug peddlers at 370 villages. As many as 10,256 farmers were given seeds to raise alternative crops in 10,800 acres in ASR district,” the IGP highlighted.

IGP Ravi Krishna claimed that the use of drones created fear among the ganja cultivators, adding that the use of drones to locate the ganja crop has yielded very good results in ASR district.
He noted that under the NDPS Act, Chapter 5 A, five cases were registered against some individuals and property worth Rs 7 crore had been confiscated.


“We have received information that ganja is being transported from Odisha to other States through trains. That is why; extensive checking is being carried out in all passenger trains coming from Odisha State. At the same time, round the clock checking of vehicles is being carried out on all highways and other roads to curb the transportation of ganja,” IGP Ravi Krishna observed.
The drug peddlers are using the daily wage laborers to transport ganja, he added.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has set up a toll free number 1972 especially to receive information regarding ganja cultivation and transportation and appealed to the people to
provide information by dialing the number.

Eluru SP Pratap Shiva Kishore stated that 700 KGs of ganja had been seized in the district in 20 cases and 45 drug peddlers had been arrested, adding that vehicles including 11 motorcycles
were seized.

The SP said that along with EAGLE Chief and IGP A Ravi Krishna, checking was conducted in Coromandel express train and other trains in the railway station as part of ‘Operation Vijay’ today. Many awareness programmes were organized in the district educating people on the ill-effects of ganja, the SP stated.

“Along with the district machinery, the police organized ‘Drug Bro’ programmes as part of preventing the ganja menace in the district, the SP revealed.
Railway EAGLE team SP Nageswara Rao, Railway DSP Ratan Raju other police officials took part in the checking of the trains.
