Strike affects life in Manipur for second day

Imphal, May 23 (UNI) Normal life was affected in Manipur for the second day due to a 48-hour general strike that began from Wednesday midnight to protest stopping of a Manipur State Transport vehicle carrying journalists and officials to attend Shirui festival by Army personnel on May 20.
The strike was called by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI ) to protest the demand of troops and other security personnel to black out the word 'Manipur' written on a government vehicle. This led to a major backlash from political parties and the state's civil society.
Media organizations across the state and Nagaland also opposed the disruption of a government vehicle carrying journalists to attend the festival in Ukhrul district.
The COCOMI imposed a 48-hour general strike. COCOMI has demanded an apology from the Governor and the resignation of the chief secretary, security advisor, and the state Director General of Police.
All business establishments were shut for the second day. Roads were deserted. However, movement of people towards Ukhrul district was not disturbed. All educational institutes were also closed down. Examinations and other important events scheduled for May 22 and 23 were also cancelled. Security was beefed up to prevent violence.
