TMC holds statewide rallies honouring Indian armed forces in wake of Operation Sindoor

Kolkata, May 17 (UNI) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday observed state-wide programmes across West Bengal to honour the courage and sacrifice of the Indian armed forces, in the wake of Operation Sindoor.
Following the directive of party supremo Mamata Banerjee, the tribute rallies were organised from 3 pm to 5 pm in every district, town, and block of the state. The programmes will continue on Sunday, maintaining the same schedule.
Earlier CM Mamata Banerjee had said on Wednesday, “Our party has announced rallies on Saturday and Sunday from 3 - 5 pm in every block and ward (urban areas) to pay our respects to the jawans and extend condolences towards the families of those brave-hearts who laid down their lives for the motherland.”
“We don't see this matter politically as several others. I didn't make any comments nor did our party members or state government. It is our duty to pay our respects to the martyrs who laid down their lives for our country and the armed forces who fought for us...," she added.
The TMC's tribute rallies were marked by a non-political tone, adhering strictly to the party's instruction to refrain from any political slogans or speeches. Instead, participants raised slogans such as "We are proud of the Indian Army soldiers" and "Our respect and tribute to the martyrs."

State president Subrata Bakshi had issued a circular instructing that the events be conducted with dignity, avoiding disruption to public life, including traffic congestion. All TMC workers and leaders were seen following the directive meticulously, ensuring peaceful and respectful conduct throughout the rallies.

In Kolkata there was active participation from senior party leaders and ministers. Minister Shashi Panja led a rally in Ahiritola in North Kolkata, while South Kolkata district president Debasish Kumar led a similar procession from his party office.

Minister Firhad Hakim conducted a rally in the Khidderpore area. Simultaneously, the programme was carried out in every ward under the Kolkata and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporations, as well as across Howrah.
“We take immense pride in our brave soldiers who have valiantly defended the sovereignty and integrity of our nation. We pay our heartfelt tribute to every member of the Indian Army who stood fearlessly against the terrorists responsible for the tragic loss of 26 innocent tourists in Pahalgam. We especially salute the courage of Sophia Khureshi and Bhowmika Singh,”,” Hakim said.
“This rally is a reflection of our collective spirit—it is a declaration that when it comes to our nation, we stand united. Regardless of differences, we are one people, and we will rise together to confront any threat that endangers our country,” he added.
The movement was not confined to South Bengal. In North Bengal, too, TMC leaders and ministers hit the streets in various districts and blocks to pay their respects. Demonstrating the party's commitment to national solidarity, similar programmes were also organised by TMC cadres in Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam.

Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian armed forces in retaliation to the April 22 terrorist killings of innocent civilians in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The Indian Army, in a bold counter-offensive, successfully dismantled several terror camps and inflicted heavy damage on the Pakistani military infrastructure.
