TN Guv inaugurates Kamba Ramayanam fest

Chennai, Mar 30 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi inaugurated the Kamba Ramayanam festival at Kambarmedu Archaeological site on Sunday evening.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) observes the Kamba Ramayanam festival from today till April 6.
The focus of this week-long event is to interact with school/college children and active participation
in multiple activities and cultural events in order to inculcate awareness on Kamba Ramayana tradition of Tamil Nadu, a PIB release here said.
Kambar, one of the greatest Tamil poet who lived when the Chola power was at its peak. He wrote Ramayana during the 12th century CE, which was presented to scholars at Srirangam.
Kamba Ramayanam is known as a classic, unparalleled epic in the history of Tamil literature. Many scholars have, time and again, appreciated the lyrical quality, the emotions it brings and the way Kambar tells the story through his verses.
Interestingly, the panels from the Chola temples above closely resemble the verses of Kamba Ramayanam, though it was created centuries later.
This fest was an attempt to present the panels from the Chola temples along the verses of Kamba Ramayanam so hat connoisseurs of both art and literature can cherish the cultural tradition of Ramayanam in Tamil Nadu, which has been in vogue for ages.
The ASI and the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, are jointly celebrating the Kamba Ramayanam festival. As part of this celebration, an exhibition with the theme of “Ramayanam Sculptural Panels through the eyes of Kamban” has been organised.
The week-long exhibition will showcase the traditions of Ramayanam in South India both tangible
and intangible.
The major attraction would be the hands-on activities and end up with interactive quiz competition.
The photo exhibition is open to the general public.
Earlier, a formal inauguration of the event was held on March 18 at the Singar Kovil Auditorium at the temple town of Srirangam by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
