Siddaramaiah urges Maha CM to release water for North Karnataka

Bengaluru, Apr 1 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis, requesting to release water from Warna/Koyna and Ujjani reservoirs to mitigate drinking water shortages in North Karnataka.
In his letter, Siddaramaiah highlighted the severe water scarcity affecting Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Raichur districts since the beginning of March.
He acknowledged Maharashtra’s past cooperation in releasing water during previous summers and expressed gratitude for the same.
"The situation has become more critical with rising temperatures, and existing storage levels in Hipparagi Barrage and other local reservoirs are insufficient to meet the drinking water needs until the onset of the monsoon," he stated.
The Karnataka CM urged Maharashtra to release at least 2.00 TMC of water from the Warna/Koyna reservoir into the Krishna river and 1.00 TMC from Ujjani reservoir into the Bhima river to address the immediate drinking water needs of both human beings and livestock in the affected districts.
Siddaramaiah expressed hope that Maharashtra would respond positively to the request, ensuring relief to the people of North Karnataka facing acute water shortages.
