TN: History-sheeter hacked to death, 2 special police teams formed to nab assailants

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Mar 23 (UNI) In a daring act, a notorious history-sheeter P.Kaleeswaran was hacked to death by an unidentified gang at Venkalamoorthi Nagar in Thanakkankulam on the outskirts of Madurai city late on Saturday night.
Police said here on Sunday that the 37-year-old deceased, against whom several criminal cases including two murder cases were pending at various police stations in Madurai came to visit his
wife was attacked by an armed gang, when he came out of the house.
He sustained multiple cut injuries in the murderous attack and died on the spot.
The assailants, after ensuring his death, escaped from the spot in motorcycles.
The body was removed to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) for post-mortem.
A large number of police men were deployed at Thanakkankulam and the GRH in view of the tense situation, as the relatives and associates of the deceased staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the culprits behind the murder.
Police formed two special teams to identify and arrest the culprits.
Police investigation revealed that Kaleeswaran is a close relative of V.K.Gurusamy, a Madurai-based history-sheeter and former zonal Chairperson (DMK) of Madurai City Corporation.
The murder of Kaleeswaran was a fall out of enduring enmity between Gurusamy and another former zonal Chairperson of Madurai City Corporation, M.Rajapandi (AIADMK).
Though Rajapandi died of illness, his nephew and a notorious gangster S.Kalimuthu (36) alias ‘Vellai’ Kali had vowed to eliminate the rivals of Rajapandi.
Police suspect that Kaleeswaran might have been murdered by the henchmen of Vellai Kali. However, a detailed probe is underway.
The simmering enmity between Gurusamy and Rajapandi’s gangs has resulted in a chain of retaliatory murders of over 15 people since 2001, including the killing of two henchmen in police encounter in 2018.
Gurusamy escaped an attempt on his life in 2023 at Bengaluru, while his son-in-law M.S.Pandian,
a lawyer by profession was murdered by the rival gang in 2019 in Madurai.
