A senior official from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) said here on Sunday that the fire initially broke out at the cable gallery at Unit 1 of the plant and quickly spread to other parts inside the premises.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but was suspected to be due to an electrical short circuit in the cooler room, he added.
The damage was very extensive as fire tenders from Thoothukudi, Madurai, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli were battling to douse the fire, even after 13-hours of battle, when last reports came in.

Though the exact loss would be known only after the fire was doused, preliminary reports suggest the loss might run up to several crores of rupees.
Senior revenue and police officials were supervising the fire dousing operation.
As thick black smoke engulfed the entire TTPS premises, the fire fighters were struggling to extinguish the fire.
The two firefighters, identified as Thanga Mariappan and Raj were admitted to Thoothukudi Government Medical College hospital after they inhaled black smoke while engaging in a fire fighting operation.
The TTPS has five units with a total installed capacity of 1,050 MW.
