TN: Police shoot prime accused in ex-SI murder case during arrest

Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Mar 19 (UNI) The prime accused in the brutal murder of a retired Sub Inspector of Police (SI) S.Zakhir Hussain Bijili (64) was shot in the leg by a special team, when he attempted to escape after attacking the cops at Reddiarpatti village on Wednesday.
Police said acting on specific information, a special police team rounded up Mohammed Thoufiq (32) in a hideout and attempted to arrest him.
He allegedly attacked the cops with a sickle in a bid to escape, prompting the police to open fire on him in self defence.
Thoufiq sustained bullet injury on his left leg and was admitted to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital.
Already, two persons identified as M.Akbar Sha (32) and S.Karthik have surrendered before Judicial Magistrate 4 here in connection with the murder.
The slain ex-S.I Zakhir, who was a member of the Special Protection Group (SPG) of former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi was returning to his house at Thottipalam, after offering Namaz (prayer) in a mosque on Tuesday morning, when an armed gang waylaid him at Kaatchi Mandapam in Tirunelveli town and attacked him with sickles, killing him on the spot.
Zakhir, who was serving as ‘muthavalli’ (trustee) of Murtim Zarkhan Dargah in a video post on Facebook last month alleged that he was facing death threat for resisting encroachment of 36 cents of land belonging to Wakf Board by Krishnamurthy, who converted as Muslim after marrying Noorunisha and named himself as Mohammed Thoufiq.
The land under dispute belongs to Noorunisha, wife of Thoufiq. However, Zakhir contended that the land belongs to Wakf Board and erected a shed resulting in an enemity between them.
Following a complaint from Thoufiq, the Tirunelveli town police registered a case against Zakhir under SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act.
Zakhir alleged that he was facing death threat from Thoufiq over the land dispute and despite his complaint to Tirunelveli Town police Inspector P.Gopalakrishnan and then Tirunelveli town Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Senthil Kumar, no action was taken against him, instead the two police officials are colluding with the accused (Thoufiq), he said.
Gopalakrishnan was placed under suspension today for dereliction of duty by failing to take action on a death threat complaint filed by Zakhir.
Tirunelveli City Commissioner of Police Santosh Hadimani issued an order suspending the erring police official Gopalakrishnan, following a preliminary inquiry.
A departmental action was recommended against Senthil Kumar, who is currently working as ACP in Intelligence in Coimbatore city.
