UP: Criminal involved in woman's murder killed in police encounter

Lucknow, Mar 21 (UNI) The main accused in the kidnapping and murder of a 32-year-old woman in the Malihabadabad area of the state capital Lucknow was killed in an encounter with the police late on Friday night, police sources said here.
Police sources stated that the main accused, Ajay Kumar, was confronted by the police team in the Mehmood Nagar area in Malihabad. "In an attempt to flee, the main accused opened fire on the police team and sustained bullet injuries in retaliatory firing," they said.
Police sources said that the criminal was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead after examination.
"Earlier in the day, the co-accused and Ajay's brother Dinesh were arrested by the police. Lucknow Police Commissioner Amrendra Kumar Sengar had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on Ajay's arrest," they said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwajeet Srivastava said that around 20 cases were lodged against the main accused. "A motorcycle, along with a firearm and two mobiles, was recovered from his possession," he said.
Police sources said that the incident took place late on the night of March 18 when the victim, who had gone to Varanasi for an interview, alighted at Alambagh bus station.
"The deceased booked an auto for her brother's house in Chinhat. However, the auto driver took the victim to Malihabad," they said.
Police sources said that in Malihabad the accused first looted the deceased and later attempted to assault her sexually. "When the woman resisted, Ajay strangled her," they said.
