Uttam Kumar Reddy counters Harish Rao with paddy procurement data

Hyderabad, May 13 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday countered allegations made by former Minister and BRS MLA T Harish Rao regarding paddy procurement, citing official data to highlight the Congress government's performance.

Responding through a social media post, Reddy shared comparative statistics showing a sharp rise in paddy procurement during the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season. "Harish Rao Garu, please see these comparative procurement figures of this year and stop stating falsehoods on every issue every single day!" the Minister wrote.

According to the data, the state government has procured 43.10 lakh metric tonnes (LMTs) of paddy as of May 12 this season, compared to 29.88 LMTs during the same period last year and 19.62 LMTs in 2022–23. This reflects a nearly 44 percent increase over last year and more than a 120 per cent rise compared to two years ago.

Reddy asserted that these figures demonstrate the Congress government’s proactive measures to support farmers. He noted that more procurement centers have been set up and operations streamlined to ensure timely purchase and payment, including a Rs 500 bonus per quintal for fine-quality paddy, alongside the assured Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Highlighting the state's record-breaking agricultural output, the Minister said Telangana produced 153.5 LMT of paddy in the Vanakalam (Kharif) season across 66.7 lakh acres, and 127 LMT in the ongoing Yasangi (Rabi) season, cultivated over 55 lakh acres. The total 280 LMT of paddy produced in one agricultural year marks a historic achievement for the state and one of the highest ever in the country, he added.

Reddy emphasised that these accomplishments were achieved despite challenges, including the collapse of the Kaleshwaram project, underscoring the state’s resilience and commitment to agricultural growth.
