Farmer gets highest income through horticulture: AP CM

Vijayawada, May 13 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday told the officers to widely encourage horticulture in all parts of the State, except in the Godavari and Krishna delta areas setting a target of earning a minimum Rs 1 lakh per acre per year by farmers.

The Chief Minister who conducted a review at the State Secretariat on horticulture made several suggestions to the officers. Mr Chandrababu directed the officials to set up 24 clusters in the State with 11 major crops like chilli, banana, mango, oil palm, cocoa, dragon fruit, cashew, coffee, coconut, tomato and onion and extend support to farmers.

Directing the officials to double the horticulture cultivation in the State in the coming five years from the present 18.23 hectares, the Chief Minister told the officials to create awareness among the farmers on the increasing demand for oil palm, cocoa and coconut cultivations. Observing that only less than one per cent of cocoa is being cultivated in the country now in the whole world, Mr Chandrababu felt that the crop should be cultivated in at least one lakh acres in the State to meet the global market demand.

Farmers should be imparted training to take all possible measures to maintain the quality after harvesting the cocoa crop, the Chief Minister noted. Similarly, in addition to this, if steps are taken to see to it that the farmers themselves set up small-scale processing units they will get more income, he added. The Chief Minister clearly told the officials to focus on getting a better price for the farm products.

The officials informed the Chief Minister that conclaves are being organised in all the districts every month to explain the available opportunities in the horticulture sector. Fruit covers on subsidy have also been supplied to the farmers at a cost of Rs 32 cr to those who are cultivating fruits in 10,000 hectares following which they have got an additional revenue of Rs 120 cr, they explained.

The Minister, Mr Atchen Naidu, the Chairman of the Agriculture Mission Corporation, Mr Marreddy Srinivasa Reddy and officers of the department are present at the meeting.
